When Elias was born, delivery troubles prevented from him from getting enough blood and oxygen to his brain, causing permanent damage.

As vulnerable newborn, Elias, was whisked into the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for life-saving care, parents Lauren and Eric were stunned.

“We went from a complication-free pregnancy to delivery troubles that caused seizures, brain damage and hearing loss. But in the middle of it all, Elias’ core nurses Jordana, Brianna and Sara, made all the difference.

They truly were lifelines for us.

Jordana welcomed us in to the NICU and explained each and every monitor, alarm and high-tech piece of equipment in the unit. She made us feel more at ease.

Brianna added special touches to our room on days when being away from home was extra hard. She even made a special Happy Father’s Day card for Eric and reminded them that staff were always rooting for us.

Sara was an amazing advocate. She was so confident in our ability to follow through on Elias’s home care that she encouraged the team to send us home.

And then there’s Laura. Laura was our core nurse. She was the reason I finally got to hold Elias for the first time 10 days into his stay. I knew staff were being cautious about us holding Elias with his special IV, but one morning Laura pulled up the Kangaroo chair and told me we were going to make it happen. She took so much extra care to make sure I could safely have that crucial moment with my son, and it’s a day I’ll never forget. She didn’t just care for Elias, but our whole family. She truly felt more like a friend than a nurse.

We are so thankful that Elias was born at Children’s Hospital because we not only had this amazing support system of four incredible nurses, but also a dedicated medical team with access to all the machines he needed. Elias is here today because of the amazing technology and people at Children’s Hospital.”
